The US has killed an Iranian commander who was planning another assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

US Forces Eliminate Iranian Leader Behind Plot to Assassinate Trump

The United States has neutralized a key Iranian commander who was masterminding an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump. This high-stakes operation unfolded on March 3, 2026, amid a larger military offensive against Iran.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared the details during a Pentagon briefing, highlighting how U.S. troops successfully located and took out the plot’s main architect.

Hegseth emphasized that despite Iran’s persistent efforts to target Trump, “the final say always rests with the president.” He explained that while this elimination wasn’t the core focus of the extensive U.S. campaign against Iran, it emerged as a critical target.

“Neither the president nor anyone else ever highlighted it initially. But my team and I ensured that those accountable ended up on the hit list,” Hegseth stated. For security purposes, the name of the deceased Iranian unit leader remains undisclosed, though intelligence points to his role in directing covert operations for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

This development intensifies the ongoing U.S.-Iran standoff. With Trump’s return to office in 2025, America ramped up its hardline stance toward Tehran, enforcing stricter sanctions and launching strikes on nuclear facilities.

Past plots against Trump trace back to the 2020s, particularly following the 2020 strike on General Qasem Soleimani. Security analysts believe this move could trigger retaliatory actions but also underscores the strength of U.S. surveillance and elite units.

Iran has long seen Trump as a major threat due to his aggressive “maximum pressure” strategy. Reports suggest the IRGC unit intended to use drones or recruited operatives on American soil for the attack.

The takedown formed part of Operation “Defensive Shield,” which encompassed airstrikes on Iranian positions in Syria and Iraq. Hegseth reaffirmed that the U.S. will persistently defend its officials and partners, such as Israel, against Iranian aggressions.

Regional experts from organizations like the Brookings Institution caution that these strikes might prompt Iranian countermeasures against

U.S. interests. Nevertheless, the Pentagon regards the action as a vital preemptive step to avert disaster. In response, the U.S. has bolstered cybersecurity measures and intelligence gathering to counter future threats..
