MV Vertom Tula

The world’s first solar-powered cargo ship

The Dutch company Wattlab has installed the world’s first fully-fledged solar energy system on a seagoing cargo ship.

This is a significant step towards environmentally sustainable shipping. The ship in question is the MV Vertom Tula.

The system was installed in the port of Haringhaven and took just one day to complete thanks to its modular design.

The system comprises 44 Flatrack solar panels, which together generate around 79 kilowatts of peak power.

This is enough to provide about 20-30% of the electricity for all non-engine systems on board.

This includes lighting for cabins and work areas, navigation equipment, air conditioning, and other household appliances.

This system was developed and tested in coastal conditions over several months.
