Renowned Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has presented new evidence suggesting that the third confirmed interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, is actively emitting a forward-directed beam — possibly an artificial defence mechanism designed to vaporize or deflect micrometeoroids and cosmic dust.
“Right in front of the object, in the exact direction of motion, we see an unusual elongated glow. This could be a light or plasma beam that eliminates tiny particles in its trajectory,” Loeb explained.
The conclusion comes from a fresh analysis of high-resolution images originally captured by NASA’s HiRISE instrument and supplemented by ground-based and space telescope data.
The processed frames clearly show an anomalous bright extension not behind the object (as with a typical cometary tail), but directly ahead of it — a feature virtually unknown in natural comets.
According to Professor Loeb’s hypothesis, any spacecraft travelling at interstellar speeds (tens of kilometres per second) would require active shielding.
A laser or plasma beam pointed forward would continuously clear a safe corridor by evaporating or pushing away dust grains and micrometeoroids that would otherwise erode or damage the vehicle.

Loeb’s announcement has already sparked heated debate in the astronomical community. While some researchers call it another bold (and speculative) claim, others are urging immediate follow-up observations with the James Webb Space Telescope and future interstellar probe missions to study the mysterious “protective beam” in detail.
