Hungary opposes Mark Rutte’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General

It became known that Hungary expressed its disagreement with the possible candidacy of Mark Rutte for the post of NATO Secretary General.

Such plans were announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Sijarto.

This is reported by Politico.

“Of course, we cannot support the election to the post of NATO Secretary General of a person who previously wanted to bring Hungary to its knees,” said Szijjártó.

Such statements were made a few days before Donald Trump’s meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the United States.

It is noted that Budapest’s resistance adds uncertainty to the succession plan for the top position in the Alliance.

A third of NATO’s 31 member states have not yet decided on Rutte’s support, which the US has announced.

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands is a longtime critic of the current Hungarian government.

In 2021, Rutte condemned new anti-LGBT legislation introduced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, saying the country had “nothing left to do in the European Union”.

“The long-term goal is to bring Hungary to its knees on this issue,” Rütte said at the time.
