Footwear that are over a thousand years old

It looks like this old footwear were thrown in the trash just the day before.

However, this is not the case, these shoes are over a thousand years old. Here is a Viking Age example dating back to the 10th century AD.

The shoes were discovered during excavations in the Coppergate area of York.

These battered boots were preserved thanks to the damp, oxygen-free soil, or in other words, the mud in the ditch where they were thrown.

At that time, York was one of the capitals of the Danelaw, an area under Danish law.

That is, it was previously a territory conquered by the Vikings in the north-east of England.

This exhibit is presented in the museum of the Jorvik Viking Centre.
