Cloud Hole: A scientific explanation for a rare phenomenon.
A cloud hole, or cloud gaps, is a phenomenon in which a large void forms in a cloud of solid cover.
It occurs due to the freezing of super cooled water droplets present in the cloud.
When ice crystals begin to form, they cause the water droplets to vaporize, creating the empty space.
This process is often triggered by airplanes flying through the cloud: their engines create turbulence and change the conditions, contributing to the freezing of the droplets.
In 2017, cloud holes were officially recognized by the World Meteorological Organization and included in the International Cloud Atlas.
Cloud holes appear so rarely and look so extraterrestrial that they sometimes appear to be a photomontage.
