It became known that several EU countries proposed to cancel visa-free regime with Georgia because of the law on foreign agents.
Estonia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Sweden proposed the EU to impose sanctions against Georgia because of the law on foreign agents.
This is reported by the Financial Times with reference to two sources.
Among the proposed restrictions: freezing of funds for Georgia from EU funds and introduction of point sanctions.
It is also proposed to suspend the visa-free regime, which has been in force for Georgian citizens since 2017.
At the same time, some members of the EU are against canceling the visa-free regime, because “we need to act carefully not to target the wrong people.”
This was told to journalists by a European diplomat.
It is also known that the US is preparing a bill implying either sanctions or support for Tbilisi, depending on the further actions of its authorities under the law.
Tbilisi responded by accusing the U.S. of trying to stage a revolution and setting conditions for the law’s repeal.
