A quantum computer successfully merged with a supercomputer
In Japanese research centers, IBM and RIKEN presented the world’s most powerful hybrid quantum-classical system.
This system combined the IBM Quantum System Two quantum computer with the Fugaku supercomputer – one of the fastest on the planet, writes Interesting Engineering
This is the first IBM Heron quantum processor to be installed outside the US. It contains 156 qubits and is 10 times faster and more accurate than the previous generation, the Eagle chip.
Its high performance allows you to perform calculations that are inaccessible to classical computers.
The main feature is the tight integration with Fugaku through high-speed interconnect, allowing interaction at the instruction level.
This is key to the development of quantum-classical algorithms that will be able to solve problems in chemistry, materials science, and other sciences where complex simulations are required.
“The future of computing is behind the quantum-centered model. With RIKEN, we are taking a step toward realizing it,” said IBM Quantum Vice President Jay Gambetta.
According to RIKEN representatives, the system will become a platform for creating working quantum-classical algorithms available to both academia and industry.
Already, engineers are using it to create parallel problems and optimize software.
